Infraorder Astacidea // Family Astacidae // Genus Astacus
  Astacus astacus Linnaeus, 1758
Found in clean fresh water bodies of Europe. Occurs in the basins of some rivers flowing into the northwestern part of the Black Sea (Souty-Grosset et al, 2006). It is believed that the distribution of this species in fresh water bodies of Europe in the postglacial period is anthropogenic (Holdich, 2002). This species is very sensitive to a lack of oxygen in the water, water pollution with nutrients and to crayfish plague. Found only in fresh water. In the case of the introduction of the narrow-clawed crayfish P. leptodactylus into the reservoir, the wide-clawed crayfish is usually displaced (Kessler, 1875). However, their coexistence in large lakes was also noted, where their populations are found on different conditions (Tamulyonis, 2015).
At present, the number of this species has greatly decreased due to the epidemic of the crayfish plague, which took place at the beginning of the 20th century. In the drainage basin of the Black and Azov Seas, it was recorded on the territory of Romania (Băcescu, 1967) and in the basins of the lower reaches of the Samara, Dnepr, and Tiligul rivers (Souty-Grosset et al, 2006).
