Spider crab found in North East Atlantic from Arctic to Angola. Also found in North Sea and Mediterranean Sea. (Kobjakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969) In the literature, this species for the Black Sea was regularly noted throughout the 20th century, possibly with an eye to Vladimir Chernyavsky, who designated this species in the Black Sea as Stenorhynchus phalangium Edw. But in most of these publications there is a note that this species is much less common than other species of genus Macropodia. It is possible that the authors, who made their publications on the basis of their own research, simply never saw a single specimen of this species caught in the Black Sea. It is the only species from the genus Macropodia recorded earlier for the Black Sea that can be clearly identified by the absence of thorns on the underside of the antenna stem. In the known collections from the Black Sea, individuals with such characters were absent; in the field collections of the author in the period from 1991 to 2015, they were also absent. Therefore, until the appearance of a reliable find, confirmed by a found individual or a photograph in RAW format with coordinates, all references in the literature about its finding in the Black Sea should be considered a mistake.
