Lysmata seticaudata (Risso, 1816) | Larvae development
Synonym: | Lysmata abberans Czern. | Chernyavsky, 1884 | Only for the Black Sea
Found off the Atlantic coast of Europe, in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (Kobyakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969). According to the literature data, this species is rare in the Black Sea. A young specimen with a length of 7.2 mm was caught in Sukhumi (Chernyavsky, 1884), was noted off the coast of Romania in samples from rocks overgrown with cystosera at a depth of 3-6 m (Băcescu, 1937); larvae and single adult forms were recorded in the Sevastopol Bay (Kobyakova and Dolgopolskaya, 1969). Regularly recorded in benthic samples from Kamyshovaya Bay and Kruglaya (Omega) Bay until the early 70s of the 20th century (Zaika et al., 1992). O. Kovtun discovered aggregations of this species while examining underwater caves at Cape Tarkhankut. In his article, he noted that shrimps cannot tolerate light at all, and even in a cave they emerge from crevices only after sunset (Kovtun, 2006). In the Mediterranean, L. seticaudata is found on rocky bottom and on rocks among plants. There are reports that this species acts as a moray eel cleaner (Patzner, 1982). In the Black Sea, the features of the biology of this shrimp are poorly studied, but the attempt by some authors to tie it to life exclusively in caves (Kovtun, Makarov, 2008) still has no real basis. This is evidenced by the fact that this species of shrimp was repeatedly caught among thickets of cystoseira and phyllophora far from underwater caves (Chernyavsky, 1884; Băcescu, 1937; Kobyakova and Dolgopolskaya, 1969; Zaika et al., 1992; Balkis et al, 2012 ).
