Portunus marmoreus Leach, 1814 WoRMS, 2017
Marbled swimming crab inhabits in North East Atlantic from coast of North Sea to Guinea Bissau. Found near Azores, West part Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Gabes Bay in Tunisia. (WoRMS, 2015).
A crab by name Portunus marmoreus was noted for the Sevastopol Bay as early as the 19th century (Ulyanin, 1872; Chernyavsky, 1884). At the beginning of the 20th century, a crab with the same name was noted by Zernov in collections from the Sevastopol Bay (Zernov, 1913). There were no other references to this species for the northern part of the Black Sea in the literature. This species was absent in all the examined Decapoda collections from the Black Sea. There are also no labels or cards indicating that L. marmoreus from the Black Sea has ever been recorded. Most likely it was marked by mistake. This is not surprising since some of the very similar species L. vernalis have very bright coloration similar to that of L. marmoreus. Therefore, its location in the northern part of the Black Sea is doubtful. But for the southern part, it was noted several times in the works of Turkish scientists (Kocataş, Katağan, 2003; Kocataş et al, 2004; Ateş et al, 2010; Balkis et al, 2012). There is no reason to believe that it is a mistake to mark this species in the Black Sea, as there are no confirmed finds in this region. L. marmoreus has been recorded only in the general lists of Decapoda of the Black Sea, therefore, the question of its location and distribution in the Black Sea requires study.
