The mud shrimp is found in the Atlantic Ocean from the English Channel to Portugal, in the Mediterranean Sea and in the shelf zone of the Black and Azov Seas. Lives in deep burrows which make itself in soft bottom. Comes out of burrows at night and can swim, sometimes rising to the surface of the water. (Kobjakova & Dolgopolskaya, 1969). Chernyavsky noted the ability of mud shrimp to change its color.
In the Black Sea on soft grounds, this species is widespread. Its presence can be easily identified by the presence of characteristic burrows. Probably due to its hidden lifestyle, this mud shrimp was included in the Red Book of Ukraine.
