The Strait of Magellan is located between the mainland of South America and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The length of the strait is 575 km, its wide sections reach 24-33 km, the narrowest - about 3.3 km. The water current picks up a speed of about 20-25 km / h. Depths are from 18 to 1120 m. The northwestern part is narrower, meandering and deeper, with steep rocky shores from which glaciers descend into the water; the northeastern part is wider, shallow, with low lagoon-type shores. Belong in the Subantarctic. |
