This species is native to the Atlantic coast of North America from Nova Scotia to the Florida Keys (Williams, 1984; Nizinski, 2003). The first finding of this species outside its natural range occurred in 1960 in Great Britain (Naylor, 1960). Thereafter, it was found on the southern coast of the North Sea from France to Holland (Vaz et al, 2007). In 1978, D. sayi was found in the Venetian lagoon (Mizzan, 1995). It subsequently gradually spread south along Italy's Adriatic coast to the Varano lagoon in Puglia (Florio et al, 2008). In 2009, D. sayi was first discovered in the Black Sea near Constanta, Romania (Micu et al, 2010). Euryhaline species that lives on the shallow-water coast of the sea and in the mouths of rivers with a water salinity of 9-11 ‰ (Dittel and Epifanio, 1982; Newell et al, 2007). An eurythermal species that stops feeding and hides in burrows for wintering at water temperatures below 3-5 ° C and tolerates pollution well (Mizzan, 1999).
