It occurs in the seas of the Mediterranean basin and in the coastal zone of the Black Sea to a depth of 15–20 m (Kobyakova and Dolgopolskaya, 1969). Crabs of this species are usually found among fouling. The easiest way to find them is on scraps of seaweed rolled up after a storm, ropes, nets and other objects lying on the sand. Among the thickets of algae, they can only be found by chance. When kept in an aquarium, this crab very quickly changes the scraps of plants on its shell to the same scraps, only from the surrounding algae. The spider crab is well camouflaged and almost invisible on the substrate. According to literature data, in the 19th century, it was often found in the Sevastopol Bay (Ulyanin, 1872), but by the beginning of the 1970s, the number of this species had significantly decreased (Zaika et al., 1992). | ||||
